UW Women’s Soccer Forward Alex Buck Named to U.S. National Team Development Camp

By Charles Hamaker

Seattle, WA - The UW women’s soccer program continues to see positive news for its players, as sophomore forward Alex Buck has received an invitation to partake in the U.S. National Team’s Development Camp. Buck is one of 24 players headed to the camp, which will run concurrently with the USWNT training camp in Los Angeles. The invitation continues a strong few months for Buck, who took part in the NWSL Combine alongside teammate Anna Menti in late December after a strong run in the NCAA Tournament with Washington.

Alex Buck is such a good player, I would say a delight to watch. You don’t like playing against her, but you enjoy watching her. She’s just special, and that entire team is special, which is why they ended up winning the regular season and the postseason, and they’re going to have quite a run, in my opinion.

Buck put together a strong sophomore campaign with the Huskies, especially late into Washington’s season. A brace in the first round lifted the Purple and Gold past Montana on home turf, and a near full-field sprint led to the golden goal to send the Huskies to the Sweet 16. She scored three goals in the postseason for Washington while drawing a penalty and converting her penalty in the Sweet 16 win against Virginia. Starting in all 25 matches while tallying nine goals and five assists helped Buck earn numerous honors when the dust settled. Those accolades for Alex include being named fourth-team All-America and first-team All-North Region by the United Soccer Coaches, first-team All-Big Ten at the forward position, CSC Academic All-District honors, and Fall Academic All-Big Ten honors.

It started because she went back repressed their six, won it, and then obviously went off on her own. I think it’s just been really great to see her development. The team as a whole has just gotten so much better, and as an individual, she’s just become so much more dynamic as a front runner. She’s not a linear forward that’s this fast, she’s all of it. She can play in front of the line and behind the line. She’s increased her back to goal ability, so now she’s playing a little bit more in combination. I don’t I mean all that aside the amount of ground that she covers every game, it’s more than I do in probably a full week. I think her leadership is also developing, she’s a forward, she wants to score, and so she feels that responsibility for the team.
— Nicole Van Dyke, UW women's soccer head coach, on Alex Buck's second goal in the NCAA Tournament first round win over Montana.

Buck’s 23 points on the season had her tied for the third most in the Big Ten, and her nine goals tied her for fifth most in the conference. Alex’s clutch capability didn’t just show up in the postseason, as her five game-winning goals had her tied for the team lead, second most in the Big Ten, and 24th nationally.

The Washington sophomore from Bellevue, Washington, is one of the 21 collegiate players involved in this camp, as USL Super League leading scorer Ashlyn Puerta of Sporting JAX, Dallas Trinity FC midfielder Lexi Missimo, and defender Zoe Matthews, who plays for Dux Logroño in Spain on loan from the Houston Dash, are the other three.

What’s next?

This camp that Buck will attend runs from January 17th-25th, run by U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team head coach Heather Dyche as other women’s and girls’ YNT head coaches will serve as assistants. The first part of this camp will run concurrently with the United States Women’s National Team training camp taking place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Once she returns from that camp, Buck and Washington have already been getting in some training in preparation for the 2026 season.
