Seattle Tempest Set Multiple WUL Records in 37-10 Win Over Utah Wild

By Becca Weinberg

Seattle, WA - In an incredible showing by the Seattle Tempest this past weekend, the team set records for the most goals ever scored in a Western Ultimate League (WUL) game and the largest winning point differential ever with their 37-10 win over the Utah Wild. The Tempest also held the previous WUL single-game goal record set in 2023 with a 28-16 win over Colorado Alpenglow. This game featured pure dominance on both offense and defense, but Seattle’s transition offense proved to be a major point of separation. Impact players in this game include cutter Meg Manning, with five goals, five assists, and three blocks, and handler Kaitlynne Rolling, with nine assists and one block.

First quarter: 12-3

The Tempest secured an early five-goal lead before Utah scored their first goal, and continued forcing turnover after turnover to regain possession. Goals by cutter Sabina Hartnett, cutter Alexa Romersa, cutter Drea Baroma, handler Jamie Kauffman, cutter Julien Mazo, cutter Anna Pettee, and cutter Yeh-Sun Lee were assisted by cutter Meg Manning, handler Kaitlynne Rolling, handler Brogan Jones, Pettee, and Kauffman. Huge blocks by cutter Lauren Page, handler Jessi Crowley, Manning, and Kauffman continued to retain possession for the Tempest.

The team looked very comfortable early in their fast-paced offense and did not require many passes off turnovers to score. Once their defense secured the necessary blocks and drops, Seattle appeared to average around five passes per fast break by using their deep throws and cuts. Their patient offense was complemented by defenders who positioned themselves efficiently, and combined for a whopping 12 first-quarter points.

Second quarter: 22-8

Seattle’s ability to thread passes into tight windows, keep the disc moving up the field, and connect on high-percentage throws continued to propel them past the Wild. They scored 10 more points in the second quarter compared to the Wild’s five. Goals from cutter Megan Louie, handler Cheryl Hsu, handler Amy Nguyen, cutter Nina Finley, Page, Manning, Baroma, Pettee, Kauffman, were assisted by cutter Gemma Munck, handler Peixian Rong, Rolling, Pettee, and Louie. The play of the quarter came from Kauffman, who laid out to catch a deflected pass in the endzone and save a goal for the Tempest.

The defense continued to put early pressure on the Utah offense and force turnovers, with very few Seattle turnovers in this quarter. The Tempest entered halftime with a comfortable 22-8 lead.

Third quarter: 32-9

The points kept piling on for the Tempest as they outscored Utah 10-1 in the third quarter. Rolling opened up the second half with an assist to a wide-open Baroma, and after a Utah turnover, Jones’ beautiful deep throw to Manning found Pettee for another quick Tempest goal. Nguyen secured a hand block and immediately found Manning for the 25-8 lead before the Wild scored their only point of the quarter.

Seattle looked very comfortable and confident, with no signs of slowing down, and the energy and excitement poured out of the Tempest sideline as the scoring continued. More goals from Finley, Kauffman, Manning, Munck, Nguyen, and Hsu were assisted by Mazo, Manning, Jones, Rolling, Crowley, and handler Charlie Eide. Blocks from Nguyen, Rong, Rolling, Kauffman, and Munck widened the scoring deficit even further. Seattle had already broken the previous WUL single-game scoring record at the end of the third quarter, but were clearly not done yet.

Fourth quarter: 37-10

Utah scored to start the fourth quarter, but that would be their last point of the game as Seattle scored the next five. A threaded throw from Hsu to Munck came right before an interception from Manning on the other side of the field. Pettee came down with the frisbee over a defender and found Manning right back for another Tempest goal. With the team refusing to let up, Romersa secured a block and caught a huge floating throw right back over a defender to assist Kauffman for a goal. Another Utah throwing mistake led to a Jones-to-Manning connection, followed by a Rolling-to-Baroma. The final point of the game ended with a turnover, and the Tempest secured their record-setting win.

As mentioned by commentators Charlie Mercer and Anthony Ziegler during the broadcast, an impressive performance like this highlights the deep investment in and establishment of Seattle’s ultimate frisbee programs, and how important their development has been for these players. It is a testament to the early introduction of the sport in elementary and middle school programs, and the Tempest (and Cascades) can also provide a tangible example of how far young players can go.

Stat of the game

In their second game of the season, the Tempest recorded a 94.5% completion percentage with 256 out of their 271 throws completed. Their passing accuracy and smooth connections in both the handler space and deep space helped propel them to their record-breaking win.

What’s next?

Seattle will embark on back-to-back away games this weekend, first with another matchup against the Utah Wild on April 10th at 6 PM and next with their second matchup against the Colorado Alpenglow on April 11th at 3 PM.
