Seattle Tempest Advance to WUL Championship With 21-11 Win Over Bay Area Falcons
By Becca Weinberg
In their first matchup since the 2025 Western Ultimate League (WUL) season, the Seattle Tempest dominated the Bay Area Falcons 21-11 to advance to the final round of WUL Championship Weekend. Seattle controlled the entire game, and found success in a focused intensity on both offense and defense. The team’s ability to convert on fast breaks and push the pace of play propelled them to a huge semifinal win.
First quarter: 6-3
The Seattle Tempest looked calm and confident right out of the gate, and utilized a patient red zone offense combined with lockdown defense to take an early lead. An early block by cutter Lauren Page set the stage for handler Brogan Jones to find cutter Meg Manning with a floating throw into the end zone for the team’s first goal. The Falcons got one back, but Seattle responded with three in a row through goals from handler Cheryl Hsu, cutter Ciona Antolin, and Manning with assists by cutter Drea Baroma, cutter Julien Mazo, and Jones. After another Bay Area goal, cutter Gemma Munck scored two goals in a row with assists by handler Jess Spaulding and Kauffman. The Falcons got one more back to end the quarter, but Seattle looked largely in control.
Second quarter: 11-4
The Tempest exploded for five goals in the second quarter compared to the Falcons’ one. With many long points featuring turnovers from both teams, Seattle stood out as a team able to utilize stamina and stay composed. Two goals from Kauffman, and one each from cutter Sabina Hartnett, cutter Linnea Soo, and Page were assisted by handler Nina Finley, Kauffman, Mazo, Page, and Hsu. Entering the second half, Seattle dominated on both sides of the field and held a comfortable seven-point lead.
Third quarter: 16-8
The second half began with a Bay Area goal followed by two more Tempest goals from Munck. An assist from Hsu on the first one and floater from Spaulding on the second one set Munck up nicely in the endzone. The Falcons then scored two goals in a row for the first time in the game, and the Tempest responded with three of their own. Goals by Manning, Mazo and cutter Hannah Mimmack were assisted by Munck, Jones, and Mazo, with key blocks from Manning and cutter Alexa Romersa continuing to retain possession for the Tempest.
Fourth quarter: 21-11
Another long, multi-turnover point began the fourth quarter with blocks from Munck and Hsu setting up offensive possessions for Seattle. An incredible layout catch in the endzone from Romersa off a throw by Mazo secured the first Tempest goal of the quarter. Another amazing layout score in the endzone followed with handler Cat Chung scoring through an assist by Kauffman. The remainder of Seattle’s goals were scored by Antolin, Finley, and Munck through assists by Hartnett, Spaulding, and Kauffman. Multiple blocks by Munck, Mimmack, and Hartnett kept the disc moving for the Tempest, and helped them secure their spot in the final round of WUL Championship Weekend.
