Sounders Halftime Observations From Seattle’s Home Match Against Austin, August 19th, 2026
By Charles Hamaker
Seattle, WA - The Seattle Sounders FC continue their 2026 MLS campaign with a midweek matchup against Austin FC, a side that sits second to last in the Western Conference table. Things continue to be very negative in Sounders land, considering the continued losing streak in MLS action and the lack of first-team signings, and you’d imagine that positives are on the way against an Austin side that has yet to win a road match this year.
Despite that glaring statistic, Seattle hasn’t put themselves in front of the visiting Austin, as they actually trail in possession, expected goals, shots on target, and touches in the opposition box. There have been moments of excitement for both clubs in this contest, and they both could argue that a goal could have been by their name as we head to the break. Here are some basic observations at halftime of Austin FC at Seattle Sounders FC on Wednesday, August 19th, 2026.
Seattle easily could be down a goal
Seattle has given up a few potentially dangerous instances through the first 45 minutes. Austin’s Jorge Alastuey had a left-footed shot from outside the box hit the right post, a shot that Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas may have gotten a glove on. Austin will feel like they should have broken open the scoring with that effort, and the Sounders will be happy they got away with one.
Seattle did also have to be mindful of a header from Austin’s CJ Fodrey in the 33rd minute off a corner, but the attempt went up and over the crossbar and the Sounders again avoided going down.
Sounders need to heed their own words
After their loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday night, midfielder and captain Albert Rusnák said the team needed to take more risks in attack. Risks that could put their attacking players into better positions for clearer looks on goal, especially pertinent after the club had been shut out on their own field by one of their Cascadia rivals. A potential “risk” came about in the first half of this match, and the player in direct control of the ball: Rusnák.
Seattle essentially had their version of a breakaway, with Paul Rothrock streaking up the field to Rusnák’s left and Danny Musovski to his right, both with room to attack if a through ball was fed to them. As they approached the final third, Albert didn't take a risk and instead held up the play despite the Sounders’ attacking advantage. Seattle couldn't take advantage of getting out and running with numbers, and eventually lost the ball after holding play up.
This club has a lot of negativity around it with the lack of results, the injury list remaining lengthy like a CVS receipt,
What to watch in the second half
I’d keep an eye on defender Jackson Ragen, and it wouldn’t be shocking if the Sounders decide to play it safe with him after his injury scare. Whatever he was dealing with when he went down in the first half and they brought out the stretcher is a bit odd and doesn’t necessarily seem like nothing. Here’s hoping he isn’t playing through a real injury and that it was just a scare.
Once again, Seattle is failing to get the ball into Danny Musovski in the moments that he so strongly excelled at last season. No service is getting through to him, and it's still puzzling why that isn’t happening. I wouldn’t be shocked if, as per usual over the last few months, Osaze De Rosario is brought on for Moose. Heck, maybe Schmetzer will call for De Rosario to be brought on, but they’ll keep both strikers on the field.
