Seattle Reign Battle to Scoreless Draw Against Houston Dash

By Becca Weinberg

Houston, TX - The Seattle Reign played to a 0-0 draw in Houston on Friday night, showing improvements on the field from their previous match, but not enough to secure the win. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey recorded five saves in her third shutout of the season and extended her career regular-season club records of both shutouts (16) and saves (197) for the Reign.

“I think we showed a lot of grit and determination, and I think it was a good response from last week,” said Seattle defender Phoebe McClernon post-game. “Obviously, there are a lot of things to work on, but I think it was a full team performance, so we'll take the positives where we can.”

The first half featured a few missed chances on goal, with a strong build from the backline, but a failure to finish in the final third. The Reign continuously fought off Houston’s high press, but couldn’t convert on the other end, and a great match from Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell prevented the Reign from sneaking anything by.

“I think it's on us as a forward line and midfield line to have quality in front of goal,” said midfielder Maddie Mercado post-game. “I think we're creating enough chances, and we need to be able to put one or two away. So, that's on us, and that's something that we're definitely going to be working on a lot in the next couple of weeks."

The second half continued with an evenly matched battle, and although some momentum began to build for Seattle, they struggled with the final conversion. Head coach Laura Harvey spoke after the game about encouraging the entire team to take risks and to focus on their belief that things will fall into place if they continue working.

“What I was so proud of them [for] was their effort, their ability to stick to the defensive game plan and the offensive game plan, both of those things worked,” said Harvey post-game. ”It got us in good positions to score goals, our press worked well, we won the ball off them in areas that we wanted to create opportunities again, but now it's just that final piece.”
