Mariners outfielder Victor Robles heroic catch results in shoulder injury, timeline unknown
By Charles Hamaker
San Francisco, CA - In the bottom of the ninth inning during the teams road series finale against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, Seattle Mariners right fielder Victor Robles made a spectacular leaping catch as a ball in the air by catcher Patrick Bailey drifted towards foul territory. Robles leapt into the air and made the catch, but in doing so launched his body at the netting in foul territory and his body contorted awkwardly, but he was still able to secure the catch before having to weakly toss the ball ahead to a cutoff man as Giants outfielder Luis Matos advanced all the way to third from first initially. Victor was carted off the field, and we continue to wait on more of an update after manager Dan Wilson said that it was a shoulder injury and they were waiting for results from testing he was getting done at Oracle Park with the equipment they have at the ballpark.
“Obviously an unbelievable catch. Vic, he’s a dog, puts his body out in a spot that probably could have been a foul ball, and could have just let it go, but it’s not who he is. He’s got the respect of everybody in the clubhouse, so obviously, just praying for him. He’s a big part of this team, big spark plug, brings energy every day. He’s [plays] a role in this clubhouse that we really, really appreciate. ”

“I mean, obviously he did a great effort going out there, putting his body on the line to make that catch. He was hurt from that. It was just difficult... I just noticed he was in pain, called the trainers out immediately. Obviously he made all that effort, but it’s a high cost... He’s a very impactful player for our team, defensively and offensively too. It’s a matter of seeing where things stand with him now.”
With how Robles leapt into the air to catch the ball, his left shoulder was the first part of his body that crashed into the netting and it seemed to take the brunt of the force of the impact. Robles was able to bounce off the net and get back on his feet, ensuring that he secured the catch, before he slowly fell to his knees and weakly tossed the ball to a cutoff man. Seattle center fielder Julio Rodríguez was the first player to reach Robles, and Julio immediately signaled for the trainers and members of both teams ran out to right field to check on the Mariners player.
When manager Dan Wilson met with the media following the loss, he had little details to share about Robles and the situation at hand outside of the fact that it’s a shoulder injury and he was getting seen by the staff within Oracle Park considering that they have medical equipment at the stadium like most MLB teams do. So if anything it’s a small victory that Robles didn’t have to go to the hospital, but it’s still a very vague situation and we might not know more until tomorrow afternoon when general manager Justin Hollander provides organization wide injury updates prior to the homestand beginning.
Who could Seattle bring up if Victor has to go on the injured list?
In the high likelihood that Robles needs to be placed on the injured list, just considering how much pain he seemed to be in and the fact that he needed to be carted off the field, unfortunately we need to think ahead to what outfielder the Mariners might look at in terms of a call up as they’ll be without someone there. The most likely call up seems like Dominic Canzone, who has two minor league options left and has already spent a solid amount of time at the big league level with Seattle the last few years. Canzone is with AAA Tacoma currently, with the Mariners not having the room for him considering their current starting outfielders and the utility players that can play outfield that earned Opening Day spots over him. Dominic is slashing .276/.344/.517/.861 to begin the year with the Rainiers through eight games, and homered twice earlier today against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks affiliate, and a team Canzone played on). He didn’t have the most impressive Spring Training with Seattle, slashing just .209/.244/.395/.639 as he tallied five extra base hits across 18 games. The other outfielder options in Tacoma aren’t nearly as experienced, as Spencer Packard and Rhylan Thomas haven’t reached the MLB level just yet. Samad Taylor, who has been called up by the Mariners previously, and Jack Lopez could be options as they’ve spent time in the outfield with the Rainiers so far this season but they’re generally more viewed as utility players and Seattle already has a few of those on the roster.
