Kraken Douse Flames in 6-1 Home Opener
Seattle defeated Calgary with the same score for the second time in four days; players strutted their stuff on the blue carpet
By Miracle Lucketti
Seattle, WA - Déjà vu! Seattle kicked off their season at home by defeating the Calgary Flames with a score of six to one – the very same score they won with just days ago in Calgary. Berkly Catton, Mackie Samoskevich (x2), Bobby McMann, Shane Wright, and Jordan Eberle all hit the back of the net on Sunday after strutting down the blue carpet.
As is tradition, the Kraken started their season at home by walking down a fan-lined blue carpet to cheers and requests for signatures and selfies. While Buoy showed up and showed out with several wardrobe changes (each requiring a new walk down the carpet, of course), the Kraken players still managed to clean up nicely and set the tone for the season's first home game.

Climate Pledge Arena was rocking early in the first period on Sunday, with three goals from three different scorers. Berkly Catton opened the scoring just two minutes into the period, and the Kraken kept the pressure on. Mackie Samoskevich was next, scoring roughly two minutes later – his first of the season and his first as a Seattle Kraken. Apparent scoring machine Bobby McMann netted the third goal at 7:40. The Kraken went to the locker room leading three-to-zero, and fans were in high spirits.

“Sometimes after the intros and stuff, it can be a little slow, but I thought we came out really hard and just set the tone for the rest of the game.”
The second period was a little slower for Seattle, but Shane Wright ensured it wasn’t too slow. Wright sunk his first of the season behind Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf with 6:58 gone in the period. “The play that [Wright] and [Catton] made was sick,” goaltender Joey Daccord told media after the game. He continued, “It’s awesome to see the guys scoring goals.”
If Wright woke up fans in the second, Samoskevich made them glad they were paying attention. He netted his second goal of the game after a tic-tac-toe play from linemates (and roommate) Matty Beniers and Jared McCann. “He certainly used his speed,” head coach Lane Lambert remarked of Samoskevich’s play that led to his goal. Joey Daccord referenced Samoskevich’s "elite release” as well when speaking of the two goals Samoskevich scored on Sunday evening.

Despite a stellar showing from goaltender Joey Daccord, the Flames managed to spoil the shutout, with Morgan Frost sneaking one by Daccord on a power play late into the third period. It marked the first power play goal Seattle had allowed this season, and it stung all the more for it. Kraken captain Jordan Eberle took exception to that and responded with a goal of his own just 39 seconds later, sealing the Kraken win at six goals.
“I really do believe the commitment for guys to get back here early… You know, a shortened training camp has helped. We put quite an emphasis on trying to make plays under duress and chaos, and I think that’s helped as well.”
The Kraken will face Calgary twice more this month, and Seattle can’t afford to rest on past experience and expect the same results. Lambert agreed, stating, “Even though the score was what it was tonight, I thought they [Calgary] created some good opportunities, and we’re gonna have to tighten things up when we play them next time.” Seattle will face the Flames again on October 30th and November 4th, so there’s ample time left to get right.
