Seattle Tempest Fall 16-20 to San Diego Super Bloom
By Becca Weinberg
A battle of the top teams from each Western Ultimate League (WUL) division brought an exciting and gritty matchup to Interbay Stadium this weekend. While the Seattle Tempest ultimately took the loss 16-20 against the San Diego Super Bloom, the game featured many positive Tempest outcomes. Impact players in this game include handler Cheryl Hsu with four assists and 504 throwing yards, handler Jamie Kauffman with two goals and 340 receiving yards, and cutter Meg Manning with four goals.

First quarter: 4-6
The game opened with multiple back-and-forth points that gave the Tempest a two-point deficit heading into the second quarter. Goals from handler Kaitlynne Roling, handler Cheryl Hsu, handler Brogan Jones, and cutter Meg Manning were scored through two assists from handler Jamie Kauffman and two from Hsu. Two big defensive stops from cutter Ciona Antolin helped the Tempest stop San Diego’s momentum and keep the game close.
Second quarter: 8-11
Seattle’s defense continued to step up and generate turnovers, with a number of blocks from cutter Alexa Romersa, handler Amy Nguyen, Hsu, and Manning in the second quarter. Both teams continued trading points, and the Tempest utilized their speed in the deep space to beat defenders to the disc. Goals from cutter Lauren Page, Kauffman, Rolling, and Manning were assisted three times by Jones and once from handler Jess Spaulding. The Tempest headed into halftime only down by three but still with some work to do.
Third quarter: 12-17
The Super Bloom continued to build on their lead in the second half, with six goals compared to the Tempest’s four during the third quarter. Both teams continued to battle, but San Diego had an answer for every Tempest scoring run. The Super Bloom scored first in the third quarter, but Manning secured a block the following point and Hsu found her back in the endzone for a goal. San Diego came up with another quick answer, and Seattle responded with another Hsu to Manning connection. The back-and-forth scoring continued, with additional Tempest goals from cutter Gemma Munck and cutter Anna Pettee with impressive assists from handler Megan Louie and Spaulding.
Fourth quarter: 16-20
Four more Tempest goals were not enough to erase their goal deficit, and although they battled to the end, Seattle was handed their second loss of the season. There were many positives to take away from the game, and both teams showed great strengths, but the Super Bloom ultimately came out on top.
Stat of the game:
In their sixth game of the season, the Seattle Tempest recorded 1,548 total yards, utilizing both their speed downfield and deep throws to gain yards quickly and work up the field.
What’s next:
The Tempest will head to Oregon to face the Soar in a Northwest rivalry matchup on Saturday, May 16th, at 2 PM. The Soar will be coming off a bye week, and Seattle will need to regroup quickly from their previous game in order to keep this one close.
