Seattle Cascades Lose 16-26 to Oakland Spiders

By Becca Weinberg

The Seattle Cascades played a demanding matchup this weekend against the undefeated Oakland Spiders, the West Division's top team, and were ultimately handed a 16-26 loss. The Cascades kept the first half close, and had many bright moments in the second half, but the Spiders were able to continuously expand their lead as the game went on. Impact players in this game include cutter Gavin Leahy with three goals, one block, and 267 receiving yards, handler Marc Munoz with one assist, three goals, and one block, and handler Spencer Lofink with five assists and 243 throwing yards.

First quarter: 4-7

The Cascades started off strong with a quick goal from handler Spencer Lofink to hybrid player Zeppelin Raunig, and followed with a block by handler Ricky Mcleod. However, the Spiders converted the next point and went on to score five goals in a row to take an early 5-1 lead. Each time that Seattle got one back, Oakland came up with a quick goal immediately after. The Cascades scored three more goals in the first quarter with cutter Jack Brown and handler Conor Belfield assisting cutter Asher Lantz, handler Derek Mourad, and handler Marc Munoz to get on the board.

Second quarter: 10-12

The fast-paced game continued with back-and-forth goals in the second quarter. The Cascades struggled to keep pace with the Spiders’ deep cutting, but made the most of their offensive points with a patient redzone setup. Two goals from Munoz and one each from handler Keaton Orser, handler Tommy Li, Lantz, and Belfield came through assists by handler Emmet Shipway, handler Kodi Smart, Belfield, Lofink, and Munoz. The Cascades managed to outscore Oakland in this quarter 6-5 and condense their lead to just two points before halftime.

Third quarter: 14-20

Seattle scored the first two points of the second half, with a Mourad to Belfield connection followed by Orser finding cutter Mikey O’Brien to tie the game at 12-12 for the first time since 1-1. The Spiders started to break away, however, and eventually extended Seattle’s goal deficit by six points. They scored two more before Leahy found the end of a deep throw by Orser, and scored another six in a row after that. Leahy scored off an assist from Lofink at the end of the quarter, but not before the Spiders had done some damage.

Fourth quarter: 16-26

The Cascades scored two more goals the rest of the game compared to the Spiders’ six, and continued to be hurt by turnovers. A callahan goal from Belfield (a unique frisbee play where the defender intercepts the disc in their opponent’s endzone) and another Lofink to Leahy connection concluded Seattle’s scoring, and although their defensive effort showed up until the very end, the Cascades suffered a crushing defeat at home.

Stat of the game:

In their second game of the season, the Cascades recorded an 85% red zone conversation rate, and scored 11 out of their 13 chances in the red zone. Many of their goals in this game were scored with deep throws, but when they approached the red zone and worked up the field, the Cascades were very patient and found open players without forcing throws.

What’s next:

The Cascades will regroup for their Week 4 matchup against Northwest rival Oregon Steel on Saturday, May 16th at 5:15 PM in Portland. The Steel are in the midst of an 0-4 start to their UFA season, and will be looking for a close game against Seattle this weekend.
