By Becca Weinberg
The Seattle Cascades lost a tough matchup to the Austin Sol 25-20 on Sunday in game two of back-to-back away matchups. The game stayed close until the end, but Austin pulled away in the fourth quarter to win their first meeting with the Cascades since 2021. Impact players in this game include hybrid player Garrett Martin with five goals and five assists, cutter Ricky McLeod with five blocks, and handler Spencer Lofink with two assists, two goals, and 364 throwing yards.

First quarter: 6-6
Both teams traded points to begin the game with an even score after one quarter. Goals from handler Spencer Lofink, hybrid player Garrett Martin, handler Ben Kass-Mullet, cutter Mikey O’Brien, and handler Emmet Shipway were scored through assists by cutter Asher Lantz, handler Marc Munoz, cutter Erik Aadalen, cutter Langley Fitzpatrick, O’Brien, and Martin. Key blocks throughout the first quarter were recorded by cutter Brandon Li, cutter Jack Brown, and cutter Ricky McLeod to keep the game close.
Second quarter: 14-12
Another long string of back-to-back points concluded the first half as the Cascades headed into halftime with a slim two-point lead. Two goals from Martin and one each from cutter Gavin Leahy, cutter Nolan Stoppel, cutter Caleb Campbell, Lofink, and Lantz came through assists by hybrid player Zeppelin Raunig, Martin, Lofink,, Munoz, McLeod, and Kass-Mullet. Additional blocks by Aadalen. Both teams exhibited calm under pressure, especially in the red zone, and appeared to generally be evenly matched at the end of the first half.
Third quarter: 17-19
Things started to unravel for Seattle as the Sol opened the second half with six straight goals. The Cascades finally got back on the board after a defensive stop from Lantz set up a huge layout grab in the endzone by Li through an assist by handler Kodi Smart. Shipway floated a throw to Fitzpatrick to get another one back for Seattle before Sol scored one more. The third quarter ended with an emphatic layout block by Martin, who caught the disc right back from Kass-Mullet to keep the game close. The Cascades lost their lead but still had a foot on the gas heading into the fourth quarter.
Fourth quarter: 20-25
Seattle’s three fourth quarter goals weren't enough to erase their small deficit as the Sol’s scoring streak in the previous quarter proved to be detrimental. A block by Brown in the endzone set up a pass from O’Brien to a wide open Stoppel in transition, but Sol responded quickly with two more goals of their own. Martin connected with Smart for a goal in the next point, but Austin scored another two goals in a row. The Cascades’ last goal of the game came from a great deep throw from Martin to Fitzpatrick, but Austin piled on with two more to end the game. The wear and tear of Seattle’s roster during their long away weekend started to show towards the final minutes as the Sol began to break away.
Stat of the game:
In their fifth game of the season, the Seattle Cascades recorded a 27% break percentage, meaning they were only able to convert 6 out of their 22 chances to score off a turnover. With their worst break percentage since the first game of the season, the Cascades were unable to capitalize on scoring chances throughout the game and it ended up preventing their comeback hopes in the end.
What’s next:
The Cascades will enter a bye week before returning home for a divisional matchup against the Salt Lake Shred on Saturday, June 13th at 5 PM. This will likely be an important matchup for playoff seeding towards the end of the season, as both teams currently sit in the middle of the West Division.
