Seattle Tempest Improve to 4-1 With 24-15 Win Over Oregon Soar
By Becca Weinberg
Seattle, WA - The Seattle Tempest continued adding to their league-leading point differential with another dominant home win on Saturday against the Oregon Soar. The game was tied after the first quarter, but the Tempest quickly began breaking away to eventually secure the 24-15 victory. Impact players in this game include cutter Gemma Munck with two goals, three assists, and 240 receiving yards, cutter Ciona Antolin with four goals and two blocks, and cutter Yeh-Sun Lee with four goals.
First quarter: 4-4
The long-standing Northwest Rivalry could be felt from the first point of the game, with a unique intensity displayed by both teams. The beginning of the game featured many long points that included multiple turnovers from both teams, and a true battle downfield. Goals from cutter Drea Baroma, handler Jamie Kauffman, handler Jess Spaulding, and cutter Megan Louie were completed through assists by handler Cherly Hsu, cutter Gemma Munck, and two from cutter Alexa Kirkland to end the first quarter in a 4-4 tie.
Second quarter: 13-5
In what could be viewed as a tale of two quarters, the second was all Seattle. Their nine second quarter points compared to Oregon’s one showed complete domination and set the tone for how the rest of the game would look. So did Kauffman’s cross-field hammer throw to cutter Meg Manning for the first goal of the quarter, a rare throw in ultimate frisbee that sends the disc upside down to its receiver. A throwing turnover by the Soar the following point set up a beautiful floating throw from handler Jessi Crowley to cutter Sabina Hartnett, and another Soar throwing mistake resulted in a connection between handler Brogan Jones and cutter Alexa Romersa for a goal.
The Tempest scored their fifth and sixth points in a row before Oregon finally got its first and only point of the quarter. An interception by Lee set up a deep throw from Hsu to Munck, and an interception by cutter Julien Mazo right in front of the endzone led to Romersa finding Antolin for the goal. Antolin followed the Tempest scoring run with the most casual backflip you’ll ever see in celebration.
Seattle was not done yet, however, and scored three more points before halftime. Cutter Lauren Page, Louie, and Lee recorded goals with assists from Munck, Jones, and Hsu to create an eight-point lead heading into the second half.

Third quarter: 19-9
Both teams continued trading points to begin the second half, and Seattle ended the third quarter with an even larger lead. Three goals from Manning, two from Lee, and one from Antolin were assisted by cutter Sidra Pierson, Munck, Spaulding, Kauffman, and Hsu. Key blocks from Antolin, Manning, and Page retained possession for the Tempest, and carried them into the fourth quarter with a 10 point lead over the Soar.
Fourth quarter: 24-15
Cutter Anna Pettee, Page, Lee, Antolin, and Munck rounded out the scoring for the Tempest in the fourth quarter with assists from cutter Hannah Mimmack, Kauffman, Baroma, Louie, and Hsu. The joy and excitement continued pouring out of the Tempest players all the way up to the final buzzer, and the game concluded with a satisfactory win over a tough rival.
Stat of the game:
In their fifth game of the season, the Seattle Tempest recorded a 72.2% red zone efficiency, which carried them to their high point total due to their ability to connect passes and cut effectively downfield.
What's next:
The Tempest now enter a unique two-week bye, and will not play again until May 9th when they host the San Diego Super Bloom in a Week 9 matchup. Seattle will need to stay sharp during their time off, as the Super Bloom are currently the top team in the South Conference with a 3-1 record, and this game could be a playoff preview for two of the league’s top teams.
