San Diego, CA - After a back-and-forth battle between two of the Western Ultimate League’s (WUL) top teams, the Seattle Tempest lost in overtime to San Diego Super Bloom 15-16 on Saturday night. Tempest came up with many game-changing plays on defense but were unable to convert their momentum into goals. Super Bloom did not make many mistakes, and Seattle left with their first loss of the 2025 season. Impact players in this game included handler Sadie Jezierski with five blocks, four assists, and 313 throwing yards, cutter Lauren Page with four goals, and handler Drea Baroma with two assists, three goals, and one block.

First period: 2-4

Seattle began the game with multiple turnovers that led to quick San Diego goals. With forced passes and a few miscommunications for the Tempest on offense, Super Bloom quickly took a 2-0 lead. The Tempest were able to recover and get into the game with greater focus on offense. Utilizing tight windows to work up the field, cutter Drea Baroma connected with handler Cheryl Hsu off a floating, high-release forehand for the first Tempest point of the game.

San Diego scored the next two points with more patient movement up the field and testing their deep option early in the game. Tempest responded quickly with an assist from Hsu to handler Julia Hasbrook for the last goal of the first period.

Second period: 6-8

Super Bloom came out of the second period with a very quick deep look into the endzone, and followed the next point with the same strategy. With another set of two goals in a row to begin the period, the Tempest were forced to clean up their offense and find ways to break down the San Diego defense. They did so effectively, first with an easy Hsu to Baroma connection at the endzone line to score, followed by a perfectly-timed layout block by handler Sadie Jezierski on the other end, who stood up immediately to find Hasbrook in the deep space. Hasbrook came down over multiple Super Bloom defenders to secure the grab, and continued working up the field to cutter Brogan Jones, who assisted cutter Anna Pettee for the goal.

The following point, cutter Jamie Eriksson found cutter Lauren Page for a huge layout catch to secure Seattle’s third point in a row. Throughout the period, Tempest had many different players stepping up in important moments to make big, momentum-changing plays, which kept them in the game consistently.

Super Bloom scored the next two points after multiple turnovers on each side, but Tempest got one back with a beautiful floating throw by handler Charlie Eide to Hasbrook for the goal. After another point with multiple turnovers, Super Bloom squeezed out one more goal to end the first half.

Third period: 9-11

San Diego opened the second half in the same way they had started the previous two periods. Working off of Tempest turnovers in the backfield, Super Bloom scored two quick points in a row. The Tempest were once again able to keep themselves in the game with patient handler movement, as Baroma connected with Jones for the first Seattle point of the second half. In the following point, Jezierski launched a nearly full-field throw to Page, who came up on the other end with another huge layout goal.

The following points included more big playmaking opportunities for the Tempest, including big blocks by Page, Jones, and Jezierski to prevent scoring opportunities, yet San Diego continued to respond by creating scoring chances.

In the last point of the period, Jezierski secured yet another block followed by a layout catch one pass later. After a few more turnovers, the passing progression finally found Eriksson, who made the catch off a deflection by Page for the goal.

Fourth period: 14-14

Tempest used their momentum from the previous goal to start the fourth period on a high note. A layout block from Baroma led to a patient offensive set, and an assist from Jones to Page for the goal. Super Bloom responded quickly, utilizing the open side of the field to score another two points in a row.

Tempest followed with four points in a row, starting first with an accurate deep look from Hasbrook to Eriksson, and a flowing endzone set-up that led to a goal from handler Lani Nguyen off an assist by Jones. The next point featured an immediate block by Page and a curling forehand by Jezierski back to Page in the endzone for the goal. Tempest forced another quick San Diego turnover, and Jezierski secured her second assist in a row with a slotted pass to a diving hybrid player Emily Decker to tie the game at 13.

After another point of lockdown defense, in large part thanks to handler Ikran Elmi’s lockdown defense in the handler space, Jezierski found another small window to slot a pass to Baroma for the goal. As the clock neared zero, Super Bloom had the last possession of the game, and were able to find an open receiver to send the game to overtime.

OT: 15-16

To begin the four-minute overtime period, San Diego won the coin toss and elected to receive, which led to a quick, upline goal to begin the period. Tempest responded with great handler movement and cutter placement to break through Super Bloom’s zone defense. Jezierski found hybrid player Anna Cauchy for a huge deep look, who connected with a wide open Baroma in the end zone.

With only 45-seconds left, the next point was set to decide the winner of the game. Super Bloom started the last possession with the disc, and worked confidently up the field before calling a timeout on the goal line with two seconds remaining. Allowing them to set up in an ideal endzone set, San Diego hit a wide open pass as time expired to win the game. Through a hard fought battle from two well-matched teams, Super Bloom came out on top as one of two remaining undefeated teams in the WUL this season.
