Mariners Reliever Gabe Speier and Manager Dan Wilson Handed Suspensions After Incident With Tigers

Seattle, WA - Following an eventful game two of three between the visiting Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday night, suspensions have been handed down to two members of the Mariners. With a few hours to go before the rubber match between the two teams that met in last year’s American League Divisional Series, it was announced by Major League Baseball that reliever Gabe Speier and manager Dan Wilson had received suspensions as well as undisclosed fines.
The punishment comes down on them after their involvement in a heated discussion between the two teams last night, which saw the benches clear but no real fighting took place. In the seventh inning of the game, Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh was hit in the ribs with a fastball from Tigers reliever Enmanuel De Jesus. In the eighth inning, Seattle reliever Gabe Speier hit Torres with a pitch in the leg. Major League Baseball ruled that Gabe intentionally threw the pitch that hit Torres, handing him a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine.
Torres took issue with the pitch, which makes sense considering that the pitch before from Speier was in the same location, and some words were exchanged between Gleyber and Cal before both the benches and bullpens cleared. No punches were thrown, nobody was shoved, and all that really took place was a bunch of standing around and talking at one another.

After both teams returned to their respective dugouts and bullpens, the umpire crew got together and ultimately decided to eject Gabe Speier before issuing warnings to both teams. Wilson ran out of the dugout after seeing the ejection of Speier, pleading his reliever’s case for only deserving a warning, before he was subsequently ejected.
Gabe Speier, along with the MLB Players Association, is appealing his three-game suspension. Because he’s appealing the suspension, the discipline is currently being held in abeyance until the appeal is complete. Speier did not appear in Thursday afternoon’s game.
Because he’s Speier’s manager, Wilson is automatically suspended for one game for the actions of his pitcher. There is no appeal process for his suspension, and he will serve it for today’s game. Manny Acta, Seattle’s bench coach, serves as the manager for this contest. Wilson joked with the media pregame that he’s never been suspended before and stated that he will be watching today’s game from his office.
“This is definitely a first, but it’s what the rule is, and not that I agree with it, but that’s where we are.”
Considering that Framber Valdez, a former Houston Astros pitcher who’s somewhat infamous for having a temper, is on the mound today, there’s been some concern that things will bubble over on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, the Tigers and Mariners had some issues back in June when Seattle was in Detroit, as Josh Naylor caused problems for the opposition with some antics on the base paths and when he was in the batter’s box.
It doesn’t appear as though there will be any fireworks between the teams, at least not early on, as Wilson said he’d speak to his player to ensure they knew the consequences of creating a fight following the events of last night’s game. More suspensions and general absences for this Mariners team that’s fighting to get back into a playoff spot would be more than suboptimal.
“There is an element of that so we do have to be smart in terms of that and in terms of injuries. We don’t want that to happen to any of our guys. That’s for sure. But at the same time, this is a tight group, and we just want to be careful. We want to keep each other safe. Hopefully, nothing happens today.”
