Mariners Reliever Matt Brash Shut Down for Remainder of 2026 Season

By Charles Hamaker

Seattle, WA - About 24 hours after his injury update press conference, which he holds at the beginning of each homestand, Seattle Mariners general manager Justin Hollander called local media together to announce that reliever Matt Brash’s season is over.

Brash had undergone an MRI on Thursday, around the time of Hollander’s press conference, and so there was no true update on his status. The wording around Brash’s injury and status seemed grim, and that feeling came to fruition today as it was announced that he’ll be shut down for eight weeks. That means he won’t be throwing until the end of October.

The hope is that he can start his offseason throwing progression sometime in early November.

Matt appeared in 20 games for Seattle this season, holding a 3-0 record while posting an ERA of 0.54 across 16 and two-thirds innings pitched, striking out 15 batters while walking five. He had been a bright spot for a Mariners bullpen that has largely struggled in 2026, dealing with injuries to Carlos Vargas, Cooper Criswell, and Cole Wilcox.

Brash had thrown a bullpen session when the team was in Boston and felt strong on the mound, but tightness in his lat area became apparent in the hours after it. The Mariners erred on the side of caution, leading to an MRI, which revealed inflammation. The MRI didn’t reveal any structural damage to the lat, but the inflammation is cause for concern.

We’re not really sure what’s causing the problem right now. He just needs more rest. Like what we’re seeing is that he’s not getting full healing, even when he began his throwing progression, it was improved but it was not gone. The recommendation was for him to throw and see how it went. We were super encouraged by the way that went until we hit this plateau. So that tells me, and that tells our docs and everyone that we just need to shut it down and see where we are in eight weeks.

The inflammation in his lat has been a recurring pattern for Brash as he’s tried to work his way back. Matt was looking towards graduating from throwing bullpens to facing live hitters and eventually a rehab assignment, but obviously his season will never reach that point following todays news.
