First quarter: 5-4
Both teams traded points in the first quarter, with the Cascades showcasing both their impressive vertical reach and quick cutting in the endzone. All goals this quarter came from leaping catchers over defenders or shifty moves to lose defenders in tight windows. Handler Ben Kass-Mullet, hybrid player Zeppelin Raunig, handler Spencer Lofink, and cutter Gavin Leahy got the scoring started for Seattle with assists by handler Conor Belfield, handler Derek Mourad, Lofink, and Martin. A key block by cutter Ricky McLeod additionally kept the game close as the Cascades progressed with a slim lead.
Second quarter: 11-6
After settling into the game, the Cascades put together a series of scoring runs to take a much larger lead into halftime. Handler Louie Bertoncin’s quick block set up a pass from him to wide-open handler Tommy Lin, and after an Apex goal, Belfield connected with Martin with a huge deep throw, and Mourad found Raunig with a floating pass into the endzone. Colorado got their final goal of the first half, and the Cascades responded with three more goals from Lofink, Kass-Mullet, and cutter Langley Fitzpatrick through assists by Lofink and McLeod. Blocks by McLeod and cutter Caleb Campbell continued to set up the Cascades for scoring chances and a five-goal lead entering halftime.
Third quarter: 13-9
A low-scoring third quarter produced three Colorado goals and two from Seattle as they were able to hold their lead. A block by Leahy transitioned to a Kass-Mullet deep throw that found a wide open Martin, and some more quick handler movement resulted in a Lofink to Martin connection. The Cascades continued to control the game entering the final quarter.
Fourth quarter: 18-11
The team’s remaining goals were scored by handler Emmet Shipway, McLeod, Lin, Martin, and Campbell through assists from handler Grant Harris, Martin, Raunig, and Bertoncin. Blocks by handler Mikey O’Brien and cutter Erik Aadalen helped hold the Apex to just two goals in the fourth quarter as Seattle walked away with the win.
Stat of the game:
In their ninth game of the season, the Seattle Cascades recorded a 96% completion percentage, with 305 out of their 319 pass attempts completed. The team’s patience in all locations of the field showed up big in this game, and was responsible for many successful possessions with just 14 total turnovers.
What’s next:
The Cascades continue their road trip tomorrow, July 4th, at Salt Lake City against the Shred at 7 PM. With a win, the Cascades could clinch a first round home playoff game and secure the second West Division spot.
