Seattle Cascades Dominate Houston Havoc 24-13

By Becca Weinberg

The Seattle Cascades secured their third win of the season in dominant fashion with a 24-13 win over the Houston Havoc. While both teams were battling the Texas sun, and mandatory heat stoppages slowed the game down, the Cascades looked comfortable and confident in their abilities. Impact players in this game include handler Ian Sweeney with three assists and 202 throwing yards, cutter Gavin Leahy with one assist and four goals, and cutter Mikey O’Brien with three goals and three blocks.

First quarter: 8-5

A very high-scoring quarter began the game, with both teams utilizing a fast-paced offense and trading points back and forth. Three goals from handler Ben Kass-Mullet, two from cutter Gavin Leahy and hybrid player Garret Martin, and one from handler Ian Sweeney capped an eight-goal first quarter for the Cascades. Four assists from handler Marc Munoz, and one each from handler Spencer Lofink, cutter Nolan Stoppel, handler Emmet Shipway, and Martin produced Seattle’s scoring chances, and important blocks from cutter Asher Lantz, handler Conor Belfield, and Sweeney retained possession.

Second quarter: 12-6

The Cascades scored four more goals in the second quarter compared to Houston’s one, and entered halftime with a six-point lead. Huge blocks from cutter Caleb Campbell, cutter Erik Aadale, Sweeney, and Belfield were featured in multiple long points with turnovers from both teams. Goals from cutter Jack Brown, cutter Mikey O’Brien, Shipway, and Belfield were assisted by cutter Grant Harris, Munoz, Campbell, and Sweeney. Seattle’s cutters continued to beat defenders deep, and their patient offense proved to be a key difference maker early in the game.

Third quarter: 20-10

Seattle continued to produce high-energy points, and found success in their deep throws in the third quarter. Six out of their eight goals to begin the second half were deep downfield connections to Cascades cutters who sped past their defenders. Goals from cutter Langley FItzpatrick, hybrid player Zeppelin Raunig, Stoppel, Campbell, Lantz, Leahy, O’Brien, and Belfield were assisted twice each by Martin and Belfield and once each by, Shipway, Sweeney, Munoz, and Lofink. The offensive success of Seattle’s third quarter propelled them to a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Fourth quarter: 24-13

The Havoc opened the fourth quarter with two goals of their own, but a Leahy-to-Kass-Mullet connection and threaded pass from Lofink to Leahy erased any hopes of a comeback. Two more goals from O’Brien and Raunig through assists by Harris and O’Brien secured the 11-point win after one last Havoc goal. An impressive showing from the Cascades in all aspects of the game led them to a 3-1 record to begin the season.

Stat of the game:

In their fourth game of the season, the Seattle Cascades recorded an 80% huck rate, completing 8 out of their 10 deep throw attempts. Seattle’s downfield connections were their biggest difference maker in this game and helped them build an early lead that was maintained throughout the game.

What’s next:

The Cascades continue their road trip with a quick turnaround as they prepare to face Austin Sol tomorrow at 10 AM. The Sol are currently the top team in the South Division with a 4-0 record, and will be a tough matchup for the worn out Cascades roster.
