Seattle Cascades Lose Final Regular Season Game 24-22 to Oregon Steel

The Seattle Cascades dropped their final regular season game to Northwest rival Oregon Steel with a score of 24-22. Oregon’s defense came up big in this game to force Seattle turnovers, and the Cascades were unable to recover from an early goal deficit. Impact players in this game include handler Spencer Lofink with nine assists, one goal, and two blocks, hybrid player Garrett Martin with six goals and two assists, and handler Ben Kass-Mullet with two goals and two assists.

First quarter: 6-5

The Steel came out hot in the first quarter with three goals in a row off of throwing errors by the Cascades offense. However, the Cascades quickly erased their three goal deficit with three goals in a row of their own by handler Spencer Lofink, handler Brandon Li, and handler Ian Sweeney through assists by handler Mikey O’Brien, handler Tommy Lin, and handler Keaton Orser. After one more quick Oregon point, Seattle put another run of three goals together. Two more goals by Sweeney and one from hybrid player Zeppelin Raunig were assisted by handler Ben Kass-Mullet, cutter Langley Fitzpatrick, and handler Kodi Smart. The quarter ended with a speedy Steel point to put the Cascades down one after 12 minutes of play.

Second quarter: 10-12

The Cascades were outscored in the second quarter 7-4, with the Steel able to create turnovers and force Seattle into tight throwing windows. Goals from Kass-Mullet, hybrid player Garrett Martin, and cutter Nolan Stoppel were all assisted by Lofink, and the Cascades entered halftime down two goals.

Third quarter: 14-18

The third quarter featured more back-and-forth action, but the Cascades were unable to break through. Their first goal of the quarter came on a marathon point that ended with Martin finding a wide-open Kass-Mullet after a great endzone set. The Steel responded very quickly with a five-pass point to beat the Cascades’ zone defense. The remainder of Seattle’s points this quarter were efficient downfield looks that appeared a lot more like their typical style of play. Goals from handler Conor Belfield and Martin were assisted by Kass-Mullet, Lofink, and Martin with one quarter left to play. 

Fourth quarter: 22-24

The last 12 minutes of play brought renewed intensity and a very high-scoring quarter, with 14 points combined. Although the Cascades continued to produce efficient goals, they were unable to erase their previous deficit. Cutter Nick Mahan, Martin, Raunig, Orser, and Sweeney scored the remaining goals of the game through assists by cutter Ricky McLeod, handler Derek Mourad, O’Brien, Lofink, and Lin. The Cascades were handed their fourth loss of the season by the Steel, but will now look towards the playoffs. 

Stat of the game:

In their 12th and final game of the regular season, the Seattle Cascades recorded just five blocks, their lowest single-game total all season. While high block rates typically contribute to their best wins, the Cascades were unable to match the Steel defense this game and had challenges forcing turnovers.

What’s next:

The Cascades will now turn their focus to the 2026 Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) Playoffs. As the two seed in the West Division, the Cascades clinched a home playoff game at Intebay Stadium. They will host the Salt Lake Shred in the first round on Saturday, July 25th at 5 PM with an exciting first round matchup.
