Portland, OR - In another tight game with a division rival, our Seattle Cascades lost a hard-fought battle to Oregon Steel 19-20, and now drop to a 1-3 overall record. Although in the lead for the majority of the game, Seattle was unable to prevent the Steel comeback and lost in overtime. Impact players in this game included cutter Langley Fitzpatrick with four blocks, hybrid player Emmett Shipway with three goals, and cutter Lukas Ambrose with three goals and two blocks.

First quarter: 5-5
The Cascades struck first with an easy goal from Shipway to open cutter Zeppelin Raunig, but Oregon came back quickly with three goals in a row. Seattle was able to catch up with goals from hybrid player Derek Mourad, handler Tommy Li, and Shipway, with two assists from hybrid player Garrett Martin and one from handler Tony Goss. The teams continued to trade points the rest of the quarter, which ended with a massive grab from Ambrose over the top of his defender. With three seconds left on the clock, handler Louie Bertoncin connected with Ambrose to tie the game at five a piece.
Second quarter: 11-7
The second quarter started with a long, multiple-turnover point that included a big block by Fitzpatrick, but eventually resulted in a Steel goal. Raunig and cutter Asher Lantz scored two in a row off assists from Martin and hybrid player Ian Sweeney, with another Steel goal in response. After one more Steel goal, the Cascades scored four in a row to follow, with patient, offensive movement that began with an assist by Goss and goal by Martin. A layout block in the endzone by Sweeney retained possession the following point, while Raunig and Shipway connected to complete the goal. For their third in a row, another layout block in the endzone by Ambrose led to Berntoncin eventually finding Ambrose back for the goal. Langley secured another block in the next point, with cutter Bailey Wu finding handler Tommy Lin for their fourth consecutive goal. The Cascades closed out the half with another huge block by Ambrose as time expired.

Third quarter: 13-12
The Cascades entered the second half with a four-point lead, but Oregon was able to cut it down to one by the end of the third quarter. Goals by Abmrose and Li with two assists from handler Conor Belfield secured Seattle’s only two goals of the quarter.
Fourth quarter: 17-17
More back-and-forth action concluded the game, with impressive goals from Sweeney, Raunig, Martin, and Mourad, and assists from Lin, Belfield, Martin, and hybrid player Brandon Li. Oregon had an answer to every Cascades goal, and kept the game within striking range. To conclude regulation play, Mourad’s leaping grab in the endzone as time expired sent the game to overtime. The Cascades were able to make game-saving plays when it matters most, but they allowed the Steel enough room to get back into the game that it wasn’t enough to seal the win.

Overtime: 19-20
Steel scored first in the five-minute overtime period, and Seattle had a quick response with a Li to Raunig connection over multiple defenders for the goal. Steel followed with another clean offensive point, but a block in the endzone by Martin set up a pass from Martin to Raunig on the other end to tie the game up at 19-19. With less than a minute left, Oregon patiently worked up the field and used the clock to their advantage. They scored the last point of the game with only a few seconds left, not leaving enough time for the Cascades to make a play.
Stat of the game:
In the Cascades’ fourth game of the season, the team recorded 14 total blocks, their second-highest, single-game total of the season. With many of their goals coming off of quick transition turnovers from blocks, the Cascades utilized their versatile defense to stay in the game until the very end.
What’s next?
The Cascades will continue their road trip with two games this upcoming weekend. Their first game is against Salt Lake Shred on Friday, May 23rd at 6:00 PM. The Shred are sitting towards the middle of the West Division to begin the season, and the Cascades will look to gain traction towards a top spot in the division with a win. Their second game of the weekend will be the team’s third meeting with the Oakland Spiders this season. With a 3:30 PM game time on Saturday, May 24th, Seattle will hope to build off its previous matchups and come out on top.
