Around The Sound - July 26th, 2025: Mariners And Reign Get Road Wins, Sounders Split Points, Storm Fall To Mystics, Seahawks Suffer Injury To RB

By Charles Hamaker

Seattle, WA - On Saturday, July 26th, 2025, four of Seattle’s professional sports teams were in game action while the Seahawks held their fourth day of training camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center. It was a winning day for the teams that were in action, as the Mariners got a bounce back road victory over the Angels while the Reign got a friendly match win over the Thorns down in Portland in their last exhibition match before the second half of the NWSL regular season kicks back off. All four of the teams that played were on the road today, as the Sounders split points against Atlanta United thanks to some late match dramatics while the Storm suffered a frustrating defeat to the Mystics as they nearly came back from a 19-point deficit. For the Seahawks as their training camp continued, a young running back suffered an injury, an established offensive lineman discussed potential contract talks, and rookies continued to impress. Here’s a wrap up of what happened in Seattle professional sports on Saturday, July 26th, 2025.

Mariners get 7-2 road win over Angels

Our Mariners represent one of two teams that won of the four total in action today for Seattle, as they took a 2-1 lead in the four-game weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels. This four-game series down in Anaheim represents a big opportunity for both American League West teams involved, as the Angels still technically have a chance in the Wild Card chase but this homestand requires them to start winning soon while the Mariners are looking to continue rolling ahead prior to the trade deadline as they’ve been able to gain some ground recently against the Houston Astros while already acquiring first baseman Josh Naylor from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a trade a few days ago. The Mariners got a strong outing from starting pitcher George Kirby, who was looking to repeat his effort from earlier this season in Anaheim when he struck out 14 batters, and while he didn’t quite copy that effort he did throw six innings of two-run ball with nine strikeouts. Seattle got a good chunk of their offense from the long ball as Julio Rodríguez, Randy Arozarena, and Cal Raleigh all went deep. A four-run sixth inning was crucial, as it helped the Mariners pull away from a 2-2 tie at the time, and the Mariners got a win on a night where the Astros lost to help gain ground in the division as they’re now four games back from Houston for the top spot in the division while also holding the second wild card spot in the American League.

Reign beat Thorns in a friendly match

In the last exhibition match ahead of returning to NWSL regular season play, with the second half of the schedule beginning on August 1st when the club plays host to Angel City FC, our Seattle Reign FC pulled out a win in a penalty shootout over the Portland Thorns FC in a “friendly” match against their rivals. This match was not broadcast, similar to the clubs international friendly last week against the Urawa Reds Diamonds Ladies at Lumen Field, so we have to go off what the social media channels for the club said and the clubs match recap itself. The first half was tight between the two Cascadia rivals but ultimately didn’t provide a real chance on goal. The first real chance came around the 50th minute, as Reign midfielder Sally Menti had a near chance and helped force some more pressure on the Thorns through the rest of the next 45. The match went scoreless through the full 90, sending things to a penalty shootout where the first four Reign players to step up (Emeri Adames, Nérilia Mondésir, Jordyn Huitema, and Sofia Huerta) found the back of the net. Portland’s goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold made a save and the Thorns converted their fifth kick, so the teams were forced into a sudden-death scenario. Seattle midfielder Maddie Mercado scored her shot in the sudden-death round and Claudia Dickey made a save on Portland’s attempt to earn the win in this exhibition match. You can attend the clubs return to NWSL regular season action, kicking off what is sure to be an exciting second half of the season as the Reign push for the postseason, when Seattle hosts Angel City FC on August 1st which is also their Pride Match at Lumen Field.

Sounders split points in Atlanta

In the lone draw of today’s Seattle professional sports teams, our Sounders overcame an ugly first half against Atlanta United and eventually split points on the road. An unfortunate own goal in the seventh minute gave Atlanta an early lead and they were well in control for the first half, as Seattle struggled heavily for the 45 minutes to begin the match. The Sounders were able to equalize the match in the 54th minute, as a Pedro de La Vega run led to his second goal in as many matches for the club. Seattle dominated the majority of the second half, and it looked as though they were going to pull all three points out of this match with a header goal from Osaze De Rosario, his first career MLS goal, coming four minutes into eight minutes of stoppage time. Unfortunately for the Sounders, an absolute rocket of a shot from Atlanta United forward Alexey Miranchuk leveled things in the final minute of stoppage time to ultimately split the points in this contest between sides from different conferences. Following this draw in MLS regular season play on the road against Atlanta, our Sounders now shift their attention to the Leagues Cup 2025 campaign with a matchup against Liga MX side and 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup winner Cruz Azul on Thursday, July 31st at Lumen Field.

Storm fall to Mystics in frustrating fashion

In the lone loss on the day as there were four of Seattle’s professional sports teams in action, our Seattle Storm suffered a frustrating defeat on the road against the Washington Mystics, going 0-2 on the season against the East Coast based side after a similarly upsetting loss back at Climate Pledge Arena on July 13th. After a strong first quarter that saw Nneka Ogwumike score or assist on Seattle’s first 16 points of the game, and 19 of the team’s 21 first-quarter points against Washington, the Storm struggled heavily in the second and third quarters as they trailed by as much as 19. Funny enough in this game, it was the Seattle bench led by Dominique Malonga that helped cut the deficit all the way down to four points as Skylar Diggins and Gabby Williams were on the bench. The Storm were never able to get closer to the Mystics lead than those four points, though, as Washington was able to pull away and hand Seattle their eleventh defeat on the year. The Storm’s three-game road trip concludes on Tuesday, July 28th with a contest against the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena with a 4PM PDT tipoff time that will be broadcast on ESPN3.

Seahawks suffer injury to running back

Three main topics dominated the news from Seahawks training camp today, and one of them unfortunately came by way of injury. Third-year running back Kenny McIntosh is believed to have suffered a torn ACL, originally reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, but more tests are being done and head coach Mike MacDonald did not speak after this session so there has been no official word from the team yet. McIntosh had to be carried off the field after going down during a special-teams open-field chase drill, and was unable to put weight on his left leg. It’s truly an unfortunate situation, first and foremost because of the fact that McIntosh will now likely have to deal with the long and extensive recovery period needed for an ACL tear, but also because it seemed as though the former Georgia Bulldog was going to potentially see an uptick in usage this season in a new offensive system. Perhaps the one silver lining is that McIntosh getting injured now means that he’s got the whole year to recover.

The second biggest piece of information out of training camp came as left tackle Charles Cross was asked if his agents had started negotiations with the Seahawks regarding a potential extension. While Cross stated that those discussions haven’t started just yet, he’s “just focused on this upcoming season and working for the upcoming season” and wants to be in Seattle long term, hoping that something gets done. Cross, who has largely been Seattle’s best offensive lineman since he was drafted, remains under contract through 2026 as the Seahawks picked up his fifth-year option. Because of this, there could be less urgency from both Seattle and Cross to get something done since he's not an expiring deal. This time of the year is normal for the Seahawks to get a deal done with those coming up on potential extensions, so you’d naturally wonder if something may be coming up.

In terms of the rookies that impressed, second round draft pick Elijah Arroyo was “catching everything from everybody” as he continues to be moved all around in formations. Third round pick and quarterback Jalen Milroe continues to show off his impressive arm and has taken some steps since his time with the organization in the Spring, making some strong throws throw tight windows to continue impressing those in attendance for the camp. The team has tomorrow off before returning to camp on Monday with padded practice.
